The comune of Chiusdino, the birthplace of St Galgano, lies around 40km south-west of Siena in the unspoilt Val di Merse region of Italy. Things to do in Chiusdino, Italy

The Val di Merse region of the Siena province is known for its unspoilt countryside, and Chiusdino is an excellent example of this. When the sun is shining there is little better than heading out into the green hills and enjoying a spot of exploring – whether it be on foot, bicycle or horseback. As with many villages in the region, Chiusdino sits atop a hill, and is around 550 metres above sea level, making for some challenging hiking opportunities.

The village centre consists of narrow winding streets, steep roads and grey stone houses. Some of the more interesting sites in Chiusdino include the Chapel of the Compagnia and the Romanesque parish church. The village is a great place to relax with a coffee or a glass of wine, especially during summer months when the temperatures are at their hottest.

With the San Galgano being just 6km away, views of the famous roofless San Galgano Abbey can be enjoyed on a clear day. Chiusdino was the actually the birthplace of the 12th century knight, and his boyhood house can be viewed in the village centre.

Places to visit on holiday in Chiusdino, Italy

The UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the city of Siena is more than worthy of a day trip when staying in Chiusdino and can be reached in around 45 minutes. Another popular option is to hire a car and head out into the neighbouring towns and villages of this picturesque region, such as Sovicille and Monticiano. The rural nature of Tuscany means that the use of a car is a near-necessity when staying in Chiusdino.

Visitors flock to Chiusdino and the surrounding Tuscan towns and villages during summer months, when the mercury often rises above 30C and the region is primed for a relaxing and rejuvenating break. A holiday can still be enjoyed outside of this season, however, with early spring and early autumn slightly cooler but still pleasant.

A flight to Florence Peretola Airport (74km, airport code FLR) is the best option for getting to Chiusdino from the UK, with Italian airline Meridiana offering flights from London Gatwick. A more widely served option is Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) in Pisa, though this option doubles your driving time upon arrival.
